Children’s Foot Care

Parents’ number one priority is keeping their children safe and healthy from head to toe, and we’re here to help (at least from ankle to toe)!

As kids grow, so do their foot care needs, so regular visits can help catch problems early, or even better, keep problems at bay. At Premier Podiatry & Orthopedics, we treat a wide range of children’s foot conditions for kids just starting to walk to teens just starting high school sports.

No matter what their age or situation, kids will get the care they need to make sure they have healthy feet and can run, jump, play, and participate in activities they enjoy.

Keep an Eye Out for These Common Kid Conditions

Flat Feet – everyone is born with flat feet with arches eventually forming overtime. However, for some, an arch never does develop and feet remain flat.

If this happens and doesn’t seem to cause pain or restrict activities, there is really no need for treatment. If pain does become a problem, conservative measures, like fitting your child with custom orthotics, are often enough to relieve discomfort and get your child back to normal activities and fun.

Ingrown Toenails –kids can get ingrown toenails due to an injury (like dropping a weight on their toes), repetitive stress (like doing lots of ballerina pirouettes), improper trimming (curving edges instead of cutting straight across), or wearing ill-fitting shoes (that squish little toes). Make sure you keep up with growing feet and changing shoes sizes and incorporate a variety of activities into your child’s day.

In-toeing – more commonly known as being pigeon-toed, kids can sometimes walk with toes pointed inward. This condition often is simply outgrown, but there are stretches and other conservative tactics that can help encourage feet to stay in proper position.

Warts – kids running barefoot at a pool party or swapping shoes with their best buddies can spread the human papillomavirus, or HPV, which causes warts. These stubborn skin growths are hard to get rid of and will keep right on spreading, so it’s best to let us treat or remove the pesky problem.

Sever’s disease – it sounds concerning, but basically this condition boils down to kids having growing pains. It happens most often in active children, and occurs when the heel bone grows faster than the Achilles tendon that attaches to it. This pulls the tendon tight, which in turn pulls on the heel causing pain.

Once your child is done growing – poof, the problem’s gone! In the meantime, ice, stretches, comfy (well-fitting!) shoes, and orthotics can all help to ease pain.

Sports injuries – young athletes are always at risk of injury, but treating such issues just happens to be one of our specialties! From ankle sprains to muscle pulls, tendinitis, stress fractures, and shin splints, we can help your child get off the bench and back in the game.

Caring for Kids Feet: It’s What We Do

Of course, there are plenty of other issues that may arise as your child grows, but that’s what we’re here for – to keep little feet happy and healthy, from the time they are tiny until they’re all grown-up! If you need help with children’s foot care, or have any other foot care needs, contact us in Carmichael or Roseville by using our online contact form or by calling 916-961-3434.
